Shawn Belle of the Tri City Americans was one of four individual winners in the National Hockey League Skills Testing that was held as part of the 2003 Home Hardware Canadian Hockey League Top Prospects Game. The NHL Skills Testing was held on Tuesday morning at the Kinsmen Arena in Kitchener. The 2003 Home Hardware CHL Top Prospects Game will be played on Wednesday, January 22 at 7:00 P.M. Eastern at the Kitchener Memorial Auditorium Complex.
Belle earned the Bobby Orr fastest skater award by putting together a combined time of 23.748 in the 60-yard dash, the 150-yard dash and one full lap skating drills. Belle had times of 2.766, 5.683 and 15.335 respectively to edge out Mike Egener of the Calgary Hitmen who had a combined time of 28.874. Belle will play for Team Orr in Wednesday’s Home Hardware CHL Top Prospect Game.
Jeff Carter of the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds recorded a time of 17.035 to capture the Joe Sakic Agility Skating Award. Carter, who is a member of Team Orr, beat Frank Rediker, the best performance from Team Cherry, to win the award. Rediker, who plays for the Windsor Spitfires, posted a time of 17.120 seconds.
David Liffiton of the Plymouth Whalers captured the Al MacInnis Hardest Shot Award. Liffiton, a member of Team Orr, fired a shot at 96.4 mph to defeat Mike Egener’s best effort of 95.0 to win the title.
Marc-Andre Fleury of the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles was the winner of the Patrick Roy Goaltender Award. Fleury, who will play for Team Cherry on Wednesday night, stopped 16 of 20 rapid-fire shots to win the title. Corey Crawford of the Moncton Wildcats was the best for Team Orr as he stopped 13 of the 20 shots that he faced.
